Whether you are visiting North East England or you live in the region, you are guaranteed to be able to find some interesting things to do at the weekend.   Whether your tastes are visiting historical places, houses or museums, tracking down the landmarks or just finding something to do with the kids, there is something for everyone.  To compile our following list we took inspiration from a number of different sources including travel guides, word of mouth and the good old internet.  We have included some well renowned places where people visiting North East England will definitely know about and want to see, but we’ve also slipped in one or two less known locations to add a unique flavour to our list.   We would love to hear about your favourite place when visiting North East England, or indeed even if you live in the region, just remark below with your comments.

2.  Kielder Water and Forest Park

kielder water and forest park  - Top 12 Things to do at the weekend when visiting North East England  With a host of activities, either by car, cycling on foot, Kielder Water and Forest Park has something for everyone.  The park offers log cabins and outer activities.  It is also a haven for campers and day    visitors.  We think this is anoutstanding area of natural beauty.  The history of the manmade Kielder reservoir is fascinating. taking some 7 years from beginning to end to construct, and providing the region  with some 200 billion litres of water. 3.  Hexham MarketHexham Market  - Top 12 Things to do at the weekend when visiting North East England

Hexham Market is held on every 2nd and 4th Saturdays in the month.  Based in the historical Market town of Hexham, the Market was nominated for the BBC Food and Farming Awards 2015.  Around the market are establishedshops displaying a variety of wares of the visitors to the region.   As well as taking in some lovely shopping,  the riverbank at Hexham is great for picnics.  Read More

4.  Theatre Royal

5.  Tanfield RailwayTanfield Railway  - Top 12 Things to do at the weekend when visiting North East England

The wonderful Tanfield Railway is a great adventure for all the family.   Set in the Durham and Gateshead countryside, this short 4 mile journey will give you magnificent views.  Their wonderful North Pole Express train ride is amust for children at Christmas, culminating in a visit to Santa’s grotto.  The railway is open to passengers on all year round on Sundays. 8.  Durham Cathedral

11.  Captain Cook Birthplace Museum

Captain Cooks Birthplace Museum  - Top 12 Things to do at the weekend when visiting North East England Celebrating the amazing legacy of Captain James Cook, Captain Cook Birthplace Museumnestles in Stewart Park, Marton, Middlesbrough,  The site covering over 120 acres contains two lakes, and is set in  beautiful woodlands.  The museum hosts displays, exhibitions and archives, visitors can also find a cafe and visitor centre.  Evey month a farmers market is held, and other event take place in the summer  months.    Read More

The wonderful Ormesby Hall, is a great home to visit, based in Middlesbrough, Teesside.  Internally,  parts of the house exhibit Victorian styling, externally there are lovely walks around the estate, with some brilliant scenery.    The Hall has a model railway and there are many events throughout the year, as well as being a sought after wedding venue.
