Holy Island , a small island just a few miles off the coast of Bamburgh, is a wonderful place for a family day out. The island is home to a small picturesque village full of gift shops and tourist spots, including Lindisfarne Castle & Priory, and many other amazing historical spots. Holy Island carries a wealth of history within its tidal walls.
Holy Island is cut off from the world twice a day by the fast moving tides, and if you’re careful, you can cross the causeway just as the tide is coming in, a truly amazing experience, and a sight you will never forget. You can then spend the day, or night on the Island, with many facilities such as Cafes and B&B’s, there’s always something for you.
In the Autumn, you can look out for Internationally important species of wildfowl and wading birds that spend their Winters on the reserve.
Spot pale-bellied brent geese coming in from Svalbard, pink footed and greylag geese, grey plovers, wigeon and bar-tailed godwits are some of the island’s visitors. Grey seals bob in the waters here and can be seen sunning themselves on the sands, accompanied by the occasional common seal.
Before you visit Holy Island , make sure to check the safe crossing times, as getting stuck on the causeway is very dangerous! Don’t let this be you!
